Director of Rise & Thrive Occupational Therapy and Registered Occupational Therapist

Hi, I’m Alaskah, an occupational therapist based in Sydney, Australia. My journey into occupational therapy began in high school, where I discovered my passion for helping others and knew this was the career I wanted to pursue. After graduating high school, I enrolled in an occupational therapy degree program. During my studies, I became a mother for the first time, experiencing firsthand the challenges and joys of parenting whilst being a studying mum!

This experience provided me with a unique perspective—navigating the transition to motherhood as a student with limited knowledge of newborn and infant development, as well as tracking developmental milestones. Like many new parents, I embarked on an extensive journey, tirelessly researching and exploring online resources to understand how to meaningfully engage and play with my baby. I have transformed to a first-time parent who felt unprepared and to now navigating my second pregnancy, this time as a qualified and practising professional, with extensive knowledge and a toolbox full of skills. This personal and professional journey opened my eyes to the significant gap in perinatal support and services available to parents - I want to share my knowledge!

My Vision

I am passionate about supporting parents with newborn and infant developmental play, postpartum well-being, and nurturing the parent-child bond during the first year of life. I am deeply passionate about empowering parents with the knowledge and tools they need to foster their baby’s development while prioritizing their own well-being.

My vision is to bridge the gap in support by creating resources and services that leave parents feeling nurtured, supported, and empowered. I believe that with the right guidance, every parent can approach their journey with confidence and joy, equipped to build strong, lasting bonds with their child.

Why are OT's suited to the newborn development space?

Occupational therapists are uniquely positioned to support parents because of our holistic approach. We consider the physical, emotional, and social aspects of parenting, providing practical strategies to promote well-being and confidence. Whether it’s addressing sensory needs, supporting mental health, or fostering meaningful connections, occupational therapists are equipped to guide parents through these critical stages.

With expertise in sensory processing, motor skills, and attachment, OTs provide evidence-based strategies to foster meaningful parent-child connections through purposeful play and daily routines. Their training ensures they can identify and address developmental challenges early, empowering parents with the tools and confidence to nurture their baby’s growth and well-being.
